Introduction	Introduction
Après avoir commandé le Librem 51 mardi 16 juin 2020, comme mon ordiphone montrait des signes de fin de vie, je perdis patience et je commandai un Pinephone2 dimanche 18 octobre 2020, je le reçus lundi 9 novembre 2020. L’ordiphone que j’utilisais depuis environ 7 ans, Samsung Galaxy S3 4G, cessa de fonctionner au début de la dernière semaine de novembre 2020. Je me libérai enfin de Google, adieu Android. Je commençai alors à utiliser quotidiennement ce Pinephone2 sous GNU Linux. Je considère que mes données personnelles m’appartiennent et je suis opposé à la surveillance de masse. GNU Linux me permet de me débarrasser d’une source de surveillance très importante sachant que mon ordiphone me suit presque partout, je veux pouvoir lui faire confiance. Je ne veux absolument pas servir des informations sur mon entourage et moi sur un plateau d’argent à l’appareil d’état régalien et aux publicitaires. Je ne veux pas que Microsoft, Apple et Google puissent décider à ma place de ce qui doit vraiment être confidentiel. Je considère que la technologie n’est pas neutre, la comprendre est essentiel pour la contrôler, la contrôler est nécessaire pour remettre en question sa conception, ses biais et les rapports de pouvoir qu’elle entretient.	After ordering the Librem 51 on Tuesday June 16th 2020, as my smartphone was showing end of life’s signs, I lost patience and I ordered a Pinephone2 on Sunday October 18th 2020, I received it on Monday November 9th 2020. The smartphone I had been using for about 7 years, Samsung Galaxy S3 4G, stopped working at the beginning of the last week of November 2020. I finally got rid of Google, goodbye Android. Then, I started to use this Pinephone2 daily under GNU Linux. I consider that my personal data belongs to me and I’m opposed to mass surveillance. GNU Linux allows me to get rid of a very important source of surveillance knowing that my smartphone follows me almost everywhere, I want to be able to trust it. I absolutely don’t want to serve information about me and my relatives on a silver platter to the regalian state apparatus and the advertisers. I don’t want Microsoft, Apple and Google to be able to decide for me what is really confidential. I consider that technology isn’t neutral, understanding it is essential to control it, controlling it is necessary to question its design, its biases and the power relationships it maintains.
Malheureusement, lorsque j’essayai de démarrer mon Pinephone2 pour la première fois, il s’éteignit au bout de quelques secondes. Je m’aperçus qu’il m’avait été livré avec une version d’un système d’exploitation qui ne fonctionnait pas. Je ne me laissai pas abattre, je pris la dernière version bêta de Manjaro Linux3, je la mis sur ma carte micro SD et je pus enfin me servir de mon ordiphone. J’utilisai cette distribution GNU Linux pendant deux mois, je fus très agacé par les plantages de Phosh4 causés par une prétendue vitesse de la mémoire vive trop élevée. Au lieu de courir acheter un autre ordiphone sous Android, je réussis à mitiger plusieurs bogues mais le plantage de l’appareil photo samedi 30 janvier 2021 au début d’une manifestation eut raison de ma patience. Je me rendis compte que le bogue de libtiff qui faisait planter Megapixels était déjà corrigé depuis des semaines sous Mobian Linux5, je décidai alors de remplacer Manjaro Linux3 (que j’avais choisi d’installer sur une carte micro SD) par Mobian Linux5 (que j’avais choisi d’installer dans la mémoire interne emmc et en activant le chiffrement complet du disque). Ainsi, je me débarrassai des plantages de Phosh4, des plantages de Megapixels et d’un bogue dans le support des langues. Après plus d’une semaine d’utilisation, je trouve Mobian Linux5 plus fiable et beaucoup plus rapide, je doute fort que la différence de vitesse soit uniquement due au lieu d’installation différent. En conséquence, les conseils que je vais vous donner s’appliquent en premier lieu à Mobian Linux5 mais ils s’appliquent quasiment tous à Manjaro Linux3 (mais le gestionnaire de paquets et les noms de paquets sont différents).	Unfortunately, when I tried to start my Pinephone2 for the first time, it shut down after a few seconds. I realized that it had come with a version of an operating system that didn’t work. I took the latest beta version of Manjaro Linux3, put it onto my micro SD card, and I was finally able to use my smartphone. I used this GNU Linux distribution for two months, I was very annoyed by the Phosh4 crashes caused by a supposedly too high RAM speed. Instead of running out to buy another Android-based smartphone, I managed to mitigate several bugs but the camera crash on Saturday January 30th 2021 at the beginning of a demonstration got the better of my patience. I realized that the libtiff bug that made Megapixels crash had already been fixed for weeks under Mobian Linux5; therefore, I decided to replace Manjaro Linux3 (which I had chosen to install on a micro SD card) by Mobian Linux5 (which I had chosen to install in the internal emmc memory and enabling full disk encryption). Thus, I got rid of Phosh4 crashes, Megapixel crashes and a bug in the language support. After more than a week of use, I find Mobian Linux5 more reliable and much faster, I doubt very much that the difference in speed is only due to the different installation location. As a consequence, the advises I’m going to give you apply first of all to Mobian Linux5 but they almost all apply to Manjaro Linux3 (but the package manager and the package names are different).
Avant d’aller plus loin, je tiens à préciser que le Pinephone2 ne se destine pas encore au grand public. Si vous êtes très attaché(e) à vos habitudes sous Android ou iOS, laissez tomber. L’installation du système d’exploitation et parfois l’installation de certains logiciels nécessitent au moins une maîtrise des rudiments de l’interface en ligne de commande.	Before going any further, I’d like to point out that the Pinephone2 isn’t intended for the general public yet. If you attach importance to your Android or iOS habits, forget it. The installation of the operating system and sometimes the installation of certain softwares require at least a mastery of the command line interface’s rudiments.
Conseils	Advises
Si vous installez le système d’exploitation sur une carte micro SD au lieu d’utiliser la mémoire interne emmc, sachez qu’il sera plus lent au démarrage et à l’exécution, choisissez une carte micro SD rapide et fiable (classe 10) en particulier si c’est pour une utilisation quotidienne et non pour un petit test.	If you install the operating system on a micro SD card instead of using the emmc internal memory, be aware that it will be slower to boot and run, choose a fast and reliable (class 10) micro SD card especially if it’s for a daily use and not for a small test.
dd fait l’affaire pour copier l’image disque mais si vous préférez un outil graphique, vous pourrez utiliser IsoDumper, Gnome-disks ou Etcher6.	dd does the trick to copy the disc image but if you prefer a graphical tool, you’ll be able to use IsoDumper, Gnome-disks or Etcher6.
Je vous conseille d’aller chercher JumpDrive ici7 et non sur Github. Le logiciel libre n’a pas besoin de s’embarrasser avec les outils de Microsoft.	I advise you to get JumpDrive here7 and not on Github. Free software doesn’t need to bother itself with Microsoft tools.
Le code de déverrouillage de l’écran est le mot de passe de l’utilisateur nommé mobian, il vous sera demandé à chaque utilisation de sudo, pensez à ne pas laisser le mot de passe par défaut, utilisez passwd pour le changer, n’oubliez pas qu’il ne doit contenir que des chiffres.	The unlock code of the screen is the password of the user named mobian, you will be asked each time you use sudo, remember not to leave the default password, use passwd to change it, remember that it should only contain numbers.
Le code de déverrouillage de l’écran n’est pas une protection très efficace, éteignez votre ordiphone en cas d’interpellation et surtout activez le chiffrement complet du disque dès l’installation. En France, seule une autorité judiciaire (par exemple un procureur) peut exiger vos mots de passe, pas un policier8 donc ne vous laissez pas intimider pendant une garde à vue.	The screen unlock code isn’t a very effective protection, turn off your smartphone in case of an arrest and above all activate the full disk encryption as soon as you install. In France, only a judicial authority (e.g. a public prosecutor) can demand your passwords, not a policeman8; therefore, don’t let yourself be intimidated during a police custody.
Je vous déconseille de laisser votre ordiphone accessible à distance en permanence que ce soit via SSH ou via le partage de dossiers, n’activez ces fonctionnalités que quand vous en avez vraiment besoin. C’est à vous de trouver le bon équilibre entre le confort et la sécurité.	I advise you not to leave your smartphone accessible remotely permanently, either via SSH or via folder sharing, activate these features only when you really need them. It’s up to you to find the right balance between comfort and security.
La mise en veille automatique cause tout un tas de bogues bien qu’elle améliore l’autonomie du Pinephone2. Par exemple, elle fait perdre la connexion au réseau (vous pouvez manquer des appels et des messages) et elle fait dysfonctionner le chronomètre et l’alarme9. Je vous recommande de la désactiver en allant dans « Paramètres » → « Énergie » → « Bouton de mise en veille et extinction » → « Mise en veille automatique ».	The automatic sleep mode causes a lot of bugs although it improves the autonomy of the Pinephone2. For example, it causes the network connection to be lost (you may miss calls and messages) and it causes the stopwatch and alarm to malfunction9. I recommend that you disable it by going to « Settings » → « Power » → « Suspend & Power Button » → « Automatic Suspend ».
Si vous voulez disposer des accents, vous devrez contourner un bogue de Squeekboard. Par exemple, pour le français, choisissez « Français » tout court, ne choisissez ni « Français (AZERTY) » ni « Français (AZERTY AFNOR) » ou bien la touche du clavier virtuel permettant d’accéder aux accents n’apparaitra pas.	If you want to have the accents, you’ll have to work around a Squeekboard bug. For example, for French, just choose « Français », don’t choose « Français (AZERTY) » or « Français (AZERTY AFNOR) » or the virtual keyboard key to access the accents won’t appear.
Megapixels enregistre les photos au format TIFF par défaut. Si vous souhaitez qu’il les enregistre au format JPEG, installez Imagemagick en entrant sudo apt-get install imagemagick. Les photos ne sont pas terribles, la prévisualisation est assez laide. Si les proportions ou les couleurs vous semblent bizarres, passez de la caméra à l’arrière à la caméra de face et ainsi de suite. Toutefois, je n’ai plus le problème de photos anormalement sombres que j’avais avec le Samsung Galaxy S3 4G bien que la résolution soit moins importante. Si vos photos n’apparaissent pas dans le dossier dédié aux images, suivez ces instructions10. Vous pouvez améliorer le post-traitement des photos en installant aussi Graphicsmagick et exiftool en entrant sudo apt-get install graphicsmagick exiftool.	Megapixels saves the pictures in TIFF format by default. If you want it to save them in JPEG format, install Imagemagick by entering sudo apt-get install imagemagick. The photos aren’t great, the preview is quite ugly. If the proportions or colors look weird to you, switch from the back camera to the front camera and so on. However, I no longer have the problem of abnormally dark photos that I had with the Samsung Galaxy S3 4G even though the resolution is lower. If your pictures don’t appear in the dedicated images folder, please follow these instructions10. You can improve the postprocessing of the pictures by installing Graphicsmagick and exiftool by entering sudo apt-get install graphicsmagick exiftool.
L’import des contacts au format VCF n’est pas encore supporté dans Gnome Contacts (un contributeur s’en occupe depuis fin janvier 202111). En attendant, vous pouvez les importer avec Evolution et ils apparaitront dans Gnome Contacts, il vous suffit d’entrer sudo apt-get install evolution et d’adapter l’échelle en entrant scale-to-fit evolution on. Ouvrez votre fichier VCF avec Evolution, il vous proposera alors d’importer vos contacts.	The import of contacts in VCF format isn’t supported yet in Gnome Contacts (a contributor has been working on it since the end of January 202111). In the meantime, you can import them with Evolution and they will appear in Gnome Contacts, just enter sudo apt-get install evolution and adapt the scale by entering scale-to-fit evolution on. Open your VCF file with Evolution, it will then offer you to import your contacts.
Je vous déconseille de passer les mises à jour avec Logiciels, utiliser l’interface en ligne de commande vous fournira des indications précises en cas de problème (par exemple en cas de verrouillage de la base et de mise à niveau interrompue). Faites sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade et sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.	I advise you not to upgrade with Software, using the command line interface will give you precise indications in case of problems (e.g. if the base locks and the upgrade is interrupted). Do sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
Si la désactivation de la mise en veille automatique ne suffit pas à réparer l’alarme, faites votre propre alarme en ligne de commande. Pour faire cela, installez at (planificateur de tâches), sox (utilitaire audio) et libsox-fmt-all (toutes ses bibliothèques de formats) avec sudo apt-get install at sox libsox-fmt-all, activez le démon d’at avec sudo systemctl enable atd et mettez une alarme qui joue ~/Musique/Union_Maid.mp3 à 7h00 avec echo "play ~/Musique/Union_Maid.mp3" | at 07:00 AM.	If disabling automatic suspend isn’t enough to fix the alarm, make your own command line alarm. To do this, install at (task scheduler), sox (audio utility) and libsox-fmt-all (all its format libraries) with sudo apt-get install at sox libsox-fmt-all, activate at‘s daemon with sudo systemctl enable atd and set an alarm that plays ~/Music/Union_Maid.mp3 at 07:00 AM with echo "play ~/Music/Union_Maid.mp3" | at 07:00 AM.
Les réglages par défaut des données mobiles pour les clients particuliers d’Orange France ne sont pas corrects, allez dans « Paramètres » → « Mobile » → « Avancé » → « Access Point Names » et configurez un point d’accès avec comme APN, nom d’utilisateur et mot de passe « orange »12.	The default mobile data settings for Orange France home customers aren’t correct, go to « Settings » → « Mobile » → « Advanced » → « Access Point Names » and configure an access point with « orange » as APN, username and password12.
import et scrot permettent d’effectuer des captures d’écran, ils supportent X Server mais pas Wayland qui est utilisé dans les distributions GNU Linux supportant le Pinephone2 donc vous devrez utiliser grim13 à la place, installez-le en entrant sudo apt-get install grim et faites une capture en entrant tout simplement grim, le fichier apparait alors dans le répertoire courant. Vous pouvez vous aider de sleep voire d’at pour simuler un retardateur.	Both import and scrot allow you to make screenshots, they support X Server but not Wayland which is used in GNU Linux distributions supporting the Pinephone2; therefore, you’ll have to use grim13 instead, install it by entering sudo apt-get install grim and make a snapshot by simply entering grim, the file then appears in the current directory. You can use sleep or even at to simulate a timer.
En février 2021, le Pinephone2 ne supporte pas encore les MMS, cette fonctionnalité est en cours de développement14. En attendant, ils apparaissent dans la liste des SMS et peuvent bloquer le modem si vous en laissez trop dans l’état « receiving ». Entrez mmcli --list-modems pour voir votre modem, repérez bien son index, entrez mmcli -m 0 --messaging-list-sms pour voir l’état des SMS dans le modem d’index 0, repérez ceux dans l’état « receiving », entrez mmcli -s 88 pour voir le contenu du SMS d’index 88 puis entrez mmcli -m 0 --messaging-delete-sms 88 pour effacer le message d’index 88 du modem d’index 0.	As of February 2021, the Pinephone2 doesn’t support MMS yet, this feature is under development14. In the meantime, they appear in the SMS list and can block the modem if you leave too many of them in the « receiving » state. Enter mmcli --list-modems to see your modem, locate its index, enter mmcli -m 0 --messaging-list-sms to see the status of the SMS in the index 0 modem, locate those in the « receiving » state, enter mmcli -s 88 to see the content of the index 88 message then enter mmcli -m 0 --messaging-delete-sms 88 to delete the index 88 message from the index 0 modem.
Mobian Linux5 bénéficie de l’écosystème de Debian Linux15, de nombreux logiciels sont disponibles, ils ne sont pas tous adaptés à un petit écran mais ils fonctionnent très bien sur un grand écran. Pour rappel, l’adaptateur livré dans le paquetage de convergence permet de relier le Pinephone2 à un écran d’ordinateur ainsi qu’à un clavier et à une souris.	Mobian Linux5 benefits from the Debian Linux15 ecosystem, a lot of softwares are available, they aren’t all adapted to a small screen but they work very well on a big screen. As a reminder, the adapter delivered in the convergence package allows to connect the Pinephone2 to a computer screen as well as a keyboard and a mouse.
Vous pouvez chiffrer vos messages avec GnuPG16 en ligne de commande comme je le fais fréquemment. Telegram17 est installé par défaut, vous pouvez installer Axolotl18 pour utiliser Signal19. Toutefois, je vous recommande très vivement d’utiliser Briar20 qui est un logiciel de messagerie chiffrée sans serveur central qui peut passer par le réseau Tor21, il sera prochainement disponible et facilement installable sous Debian15 et donc sous Mobian5. Briar20 ne passe donc ni par les serveurs d’Amazon ni par ceux de Google contrairement à Signal19. En attendant, vous trouverez ses instructions d’installation ici22.	You can encrypt your messages with GnuPG16 from the command line as I frequently do. Telegram17 is installed by default, you can install Axolotl18 to use Signal. However, I strongly recommend you use Briar20 which is an encrypted mail software without a central server that can go through the Tor network21, it will be available soon and easily installable on Debian15 and therefore on Mobian5. Briar20 doesn’t go through Amazon or Google’s servers, unlike Signal19. In the meantime, you can find installation instructions here22.
Anbox23 permet d’installer des logiciels Android sur le Pinephone2 mais comme cette fonctionnalité ne m’intéresse pas, je n’ai même pas pris la peine de la tester.	Anbox23 allows to install Android softwares on the Pinephone2 but since I’m not interested in this feature, I didn’t even bother to test it.

J’espère que le Pinephone inaugurera une nouvelle ère pour GNU Linux et contribuera à lui faire une petite place dans les poches du grand public et une grande place dans celles des militants de mon bord, n’en déplaisent aux oiseaux de mauvaise augure sur les forums et les réseaux asociaux sous contrôle impérialiste. Je pense que beaucoup de personnes moins à l’aise avec l’informatique et moins convaincues par les bienfaits du logiciel libre feront preuve de nettement moins de pugnacité que moi, il faut bien des gens pour essuyer les plâtres. Toutefois, je reste convaincu qu’il n’y a pas d’émancipation possible pour l’Homme sans une compréhension profonde de la technologie et la démocratie doit aussi trouver sa place dans l’élaboration d’outils répondant vraiment aux besoins sociaux. L’informatique prend une place de plus en plus importante dans nos vies, mieux la comprendre m’aide à entretenir un rapport apaisé avec elle, c’est pourquoi je reste favorable à une élévation du niveau général en informatique de toute la population plutôt qu’à un alignement sur les produits du marché des grands gagnants aux mains sales couvertes de sang. I hope that the Pinephone will usher in a new era for GNU Linux and help to make a small place for it in the pockets of the general public and a large place for it in the pockets of the activists on my side, no matter how ominous the birds of ill omen on the forums and on the asocial media under imperialist control. I think that many people less comfortable with computers and less convinced of the benefits of free software will be far less pugnacious than I am, it takes some people to deal with teething troubles. However, I remain convinced that there’s no possible emancipation for mankind without a deep understanding of technology, and democracy must also find its place in the development of tools that truly meet social needs. Computer science is taking an increasingly important place in our lives, and a better understanding of it helps me to maintain a peaceful relationship with it, which is why I remain in favor of raising the general level of computer science of the entire population rather than aligning ourselves with the products of the market of the big winners with dirty hands covered in blood.
